Abstract/Summary
This Current Intelligence Bulletin will provide an updated review of the scientific literature on adverse health effects in welders exposed to manganese including manganese poisoning and Parkinson-like diseases. The CIB will evaluate the risk of these adverse health effects at the current NIOSH recommended exposure limit of 1 mg/m3 and will evaluate measures that may reduce potential adverse health effects. Although manganese is presumed to be the casusative agent, the CIB will also consider whether other toxicants present in welding fumes may be contributing to the reported adverse health effects. The CIB will be developed by a corss-Institute team, and the intended audience is decision-makers in government, labor, and industry.
