Abstract/Summary
The objective of this project is to establish and validate toxicological test systems in order to perform an integrated hazard characterization of free nanoparticles of silver, ZrO2, SiO2 and TiO2 using a tiered approach. The toxicity of the particles will be assessed as a function of size, shape and dose (mass and surface area) in relevant human target cells and ecological indicator organisms. The potential toxicological mechanism of the particles will be investigated using a molecular toxicological approach, i.e. identify cellular response pathways, signalling pathway, genetic response and outcome, and the endpoints will in general be the same in human cells and the ecological test organisms. In order to establish dose-response relationships as a function of the particles variable, the particles will be extensively characterized at the different stages of the experimental studies.
