Public Awareness of Nanotechnology: What do Americans know? Who do they trust?

Major Poll Findings to be Released
WASHINGTON—How many Americans are aware of nanotechnology, the emerging science which experts argue will enable a new industrial revolution? Who do they believe should monitor the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs, over-the-counter cosmetics and skin care products—categories that are being greatly impacted by nanotechnology? Does the American public feel that the benefits of nanotechnology will outweigh the potential risks?
These questions were part of a representative national telephone survey of 1,014 adults conducted in August 2006, the first poll on nanotechnology awareness in two years. The poll is timely because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold its first major public meeting on FDA-regulated products containing nanotechnology materials on October 10, 2006.
Results from the national awareness and trust barometer poll—as well as two complementary focus groups of adult women—will be released on Tuesday, September 19th at 12:30 p.m. at a program to be held in the 5th floor conference room of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
